The HSE has reviewed its ‘MDHS 100’ guidance on asbestos surveying, which describes Type 1, 2 and 3 surveys and this document was replaced in January with ‘Managing Asbestos in Premises, the Survey Guide’, which will describe management surveys and refurbishment / demolition sur-veys.
There is a need to educate about the danger asbestos presents. Research shows that tradesmen in particular think that asbestos is a historical problem and they are not at risk.
Many properties still contain asbestos, and there will be an increasing requirement for the more invasive refurbishment / demolition surveys which are particularly demanding.
‘Managing Asbestos in Premises, the Survey Guide’ places a far greater emphasis on competency and is used internationally as a guide to survey premises for the presence of asbestos.
