In this article we will touch on the weapon which became a major breakthrough in the weapons industry. This is the Colt Revolver.
Samuel Colt decided to design a handgun with a revolving cylinder containing several bullets which could be fired through a single barrel while he was working as a seaman. As soon as he returned to the USA he continued to work on his invention, and in 1835 he patented his five-shot revolver. It was a breakthrough, as it transformed a firearm into a multiple-shot firearm.
In 1836 Colt started his Patent Arms Manufacturing business in Paterson, New Jersey. Alongside his five-shot guns, he manufactured rifles and shotguns.
Even though he made a breakthrough, sales were generally slow, and in 1842 he was forced to close down his company. Over the next few years he developed a device that could detonate an underwater explosive by remote control. Later he became heavily involved in telegraph engineering and developed the first underwater telegraph cable line.
In 1847 Colt invented a six-shot Walker revolver. Soon afterwards, the United States government ordered 1, 000 revolvers which were used in the Mexican War. Colt started a new factory in Hartford, Connecticut. By 1855 Colt had the largest private weapons producing facility in the world. He manufactured a full variety of revolvers.
During the Civil War Colt's company sold thousands of revolvers and rifles. These firearms were purchased by both sides.
After the inventor died, the company was managed by Colt's wife and employed 1, 500 workers.
Colt's most popular revolver, the Peacemaker, was made for the first time in 1873. It was produced in a selection of calibre and barrel lengths.
Samuel Colt and his arms played a significant role in the history of a developing United States. So popular was the Colt revolver during the latter half of the 1800s that it was perhaps the best-known firearm across the world. Even nowadays, the name Colt suggests arms to most Americans. |
